The following message for residential rental licensing stakeholders is from the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, & Resiliency about new legal requirements for energy-efficient lighting and renewable energy in the City and County of Denver.

All commercial and multifamily buildings in Denver that are 5,000 to 24,999 square feet must comply with Energize Denver requirements. This includes apartment buildings, commercial rentals, and condominium buildings.

More than 2,300 residential apartments in the City and County of Denver must comply with these requirements, and over 1,400 of them have a compliance deadline in 2025.

Buildings that are 5,000 to 24,999 square feet must perform one of the following to comply:

  • Verify that at least 90% of the building’s lighting load is provided by LEDs, or
  • Source 20% of the building’s energy usage from on- or off-site renewables.

To check to see if your building meets these requirements, use the building lookup tool to find your building and compliance deadline.

Once you know what program your building must follow, the next step is to make a compliance plan. This includes figuring out your compliance pathway and finding a qualified contractor to complete the work. If you aren’t sure where to start, check out the compliance guide.
