The Department of Excise and Licenses (EXL) is proposing a change to fines for rental properties in Denver. Right now, the highest fine for violating the residential rental licensing rules is $999. EXL wants to raise that amount to $5,000 per violation, per day. This will align the maximum fine amount EXL can charge for violations with the maximum fine amount that the Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) can charge for violations of the housing code.
This change would update the Denver Revised Municipal Code (DRMC), Chapter 27, Article VIII. It would make sure both city agencies have the same tools to enforce the rules for rental properties.
